Cache
An interesting and haunting idea that dosent quite work
catogorizing Cache seems near impossible other than in 'Experimental", its to long and drawn out to be a physcological thriller and to unfocused on the family politics to be a drama. the story unfolds as such, a family whos content includes a father, a mother, and a pre-pubescent boy of 12 begin to be sent surveilance tapes of their house wrapped in child like drawings of blood spitting children. thinking its some kind of prank the parents ignore it until the tapes and anonymous phone calls are added to the ever growing threat list. when the family and audience is equally clueless this movie flies on its own tension keeping the veiwer guessing and the players accusing but when a face is put on the possible prankster cache loses in anonymity and part of its appeal. once this happens many smaller plotlines arise, the wifes possible infedility due to the husbands lies, and the childs dissapearance. all of these plotlines could have suited this peice beautifully if the writer had taken the time to properly finish or integrate some kind of effect to these occurences. the affair is hinted at but it causes no member of the family grief nor does it serve as any way to advance the plot. the sons disspaearance wasts equal potential, on return he appears sullen and unwilling to open up to his shell shocked parents, a watcher assumes he knows something about the villian or the fathers cryptic past unfortunatly he inexplainably recovers and disspears from the movie. but of caches many failing its most asdtonishing one is its conclusion. first off because the cause of the movies mystery seems so trivial and small that one would wonder why the attacker would even bother(Dont believe the flashbacks that hint at foul play they are thoroughly taken out of context.)and secondly that the film dosent really have a climax, after we find the attacker and the assault is soppusoldly solved the films continues to saunter on for what seems an eternity and ends with a silent long shot that will leave the audience scratching their heads. ultimatly worth a watch only to see a great idea, notr a great movie.
