session 9

2/5 stars
Session 9

about 4 sessions to long
red herring, every horror movie has them, in small doses they are psycholigal tools to mislead and get under the skin of the suggeting audience. however when everthings a red herring(the people a character talks to, the constant playing of sessions, and even the back of the damn box the movie comes in) you've got one of the many problems that keep session 9 from being great. its not that the idea was wrong or unsalvagable from the start, this movie had the creepiest setting ive seen in years, and a talented trough of nobody actors. however it seems said movie was forged by a group of people who hated each other, a script that made all the props and people useless, a cherographer who made the majority of the film in a drab sector that was being torn down, and gave barely any time to spectacular eary parts of the hospital. a weird tape always being played is a nice effort, with some truly horrifying voices and subject matters, but it all amounts to nothing, and just makes the ending even more disjointed and nonsensicle. i could go on and on about the crimes session 9 has commited against horror, but ultimatly the most glaring is how much it hypes its own self up. the beginning is almost damaging its so scary, mainly, because like cache nothing is going on. your in an abandoned mental hospital where lights flicker, power goes out inexplainably and tension rises in the main character who is becoming more and more islolated. you are so built up and hyped that nothing could possibly meet your expectations, when the rock finally gets rolling your no longer interested in following its trail down the mountain. in theory session 9 deserves no stars because it does not accomplish, acheive, or explain anything, but i cannot be cruel to a movie with some fresh ideas to a tired genre(for instance a man after buried money, gets a coin shoved in his right eye)but i cant be leniant either.
